Occult scholars Frederick Hockley and Kenneth Mackenzie died in 1885 and 1886 respectively. Subsequently, a number of their papers were passed down via the Reverend Adolphus Frederick Alexander Woodford, a significant Masonic scholar and member of the premier Masonic research body known as the Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076, to Dr. William Wynn Westcott, as Secretary of the Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (SRIA). Among the materials were a set of papers written in an encrypted code. Today, they are referred to as the Cipher Manuscripts.
