Hebrew word meaning “father.” The Partzuf that is attributed to Chokmah and the letter Yod of Tetragrammaton. (See Partzufim.)
The mystic Cavern in the sacred Mountain of Initiation (Zanoni?). The Vault of C.R.C. of the Second Order also represents this Cavern. Mountain of God in the centre of the Universe. Below and around it are darkness and silence, and it is crowned with the
Light ineffable. At its base is the Wall of Enclosure and Secrecy, whose sole Gateway, invisible to the profane, is formed of the Two Pillars of Hermes. The ascent of the Mountain is by the Spiral path of the Serpent of Wisdom. 7:56. The word abiegnus means Abi-Agnus, Lamb of the Father. It is by metathesis Abi-Genos, born of the Father. A chasm or gulf which separates the three Supernal Sephiroth from the rest of the spheres on the Tree of Life. Considered a division between the noumenal and the phenomenal.
The Gnostics said that the Achamoth (probably a corruption of Chokmutha) attempted to comprehend the Pleroma, and could not understand it, and from the grief of her were formed the demons and evil spirits. FR #X. [M.K.G.]
Adam Kadmon
The “heavenly man” or body of God. The divine prototype of humanity which is circumscribed upon the Tree of Life. The crown of Kether is above his head and Malkuth is at his feet. The first ideal form of Man—behind the Kether

Adeptus Minor
The “lesser Adept.” The first grade of the Golden Dawn’s Inner Order. The Adept Grades comprise the Third Degree.
Hebrew word for “lord,” intoned in the south in the LBRP, and with the pentagram of Earth in the SIRP.
Adonai ha-Aretz
Hebrew phrase for “lord of earth.” Divine name associated with Malkuth.
Adonai Melekh
Hebrew phrase for “lord and king.” Associated with Malkuth.
Adoration of the Lord of the Universe
Holy art Thou, Lord of the Universe./ Holy art Thou, whom Nature hath not formed./Holy art Thou, The Vast and Might One./Lord of the Light and of the Darkness. 6:9. [M.K.G.]
From Sigillum Dei Æmeth, the Seal of Truth, used by John Dee and Edward Kelley, and placed under their crystal for protection when scrying. “The word Aemeth [spelled AMTh] is compounded of the 1st letter of the Alphabet and the
last letter, and of a middle one, as though we affirm that Truth is to be found by the reconciliation of the extremes through the knowledge of the means. Forget not that Aleph is the Spiritual and Etherial [Fool], and Tau is the Universe,
and Mem is the Sacrificial Man, placed between them so as to affirm the Reconciliation of the Natural to the Spiritual through self-sacrifice.”

Hebrew notariqon for the phrase Atah Gebur Le-Olahm Adonai or “Thou art Great forever, my Lord.” Intoned in the north in the LBRP. The divine name which is vibrated in the North when doing the banishing ritual of the pentagram. A divine name which stands for Iieth Gadol Leolam Adonai (Adonai will be great to eternity). (AGLA…’is an abbreviation for the words, Ah-tah Gee-boor Lih-oh-lahm Ah-doh-nye. It means “Thou art great forever, my lord,” and is from a Hebrew prayer.’). “It hieroglyphically encloses all the mysteries of the Kabbalah. The letter Aleph expresses unity and represents the dogma of Hermes: ‘That which is above is as that which is below,’ by its two arms, one of which points to earth and the other to heaven. The letter Ghimel expresses numerically the triad
and hieroglyphically child-birth, fecundity. The letter Lamed is the expression of the perfect cycle. It represents the circulation of the perpetual movement and the relation of the radius to the circumference. The letter Aleph repeated is the expression of the synthesis. Thus, the name AGLA signifies unity, which by the triad accomplishes the cycle of numbers to return to unity; the fruitful principle of Nature which is one with unity; the primal truth which

To extend the range of your interior perceptions, and to intensify your consciousness of identity with that One Power that governs the whole universe. Aims [Goal] of the Second Order
1) Spiritual Development; 2) extension of the powers of perception (to perceive entities, events and forces upon the super-sensuous planes); 3) learning the modes of Divination (to develop intuition) and 4) becoming familiar with the vibratory
mode of pronouncing Divine Names (to thus procure the influence of Divine Powers).To these may be added the practical study of the particular influences of colour and thus we are called “Lords of the Path of the Chameleon.” FR #XIX. Hebrew word meaning “nothing.” The outermost of the Three Negative Veils.
Ain Soph
Hebrew phrase meaning “limitless.” The middle veil of the Three Negative Veils. The Infinite, Limitless. Literally “No End”. The hidden God who emanates forth the sefirotic tree. [M.K.G.]
Ain Soph Aur
Hebrew phrase meaning “the limitless light.” The innermost of the Three Negative Veils, from which the Sephirah of Kether was formed.
Aiq Beker
An important method used in Literal Qabalah, sometimes called the “Qabalah of Nine Chambers.” A chart used to convert Hebrew letters to their numerical equivalents. The numbers arrived at in this fashion are often used to make sigils in talismanic magic. The name Aiq Beker comes from reading the Hebrew letters in the first two chambers: Aleph, Yod, Qoph, and Beth, Kaph, Resh. (See Literal Qabalah.)
One of the four magical elements. Air is said to be a combination of the qualities of heat and moisture. Air is considered active, masculine, intellectual, ethereal, abstract and communicative. (See Elements.)
Air Dagger
One of the Elemental weapons or implements of the Adept. Used to invoke or banish the element of Air.
Akasa (or Akasha)
Derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “to shine.” The Tattva associated with the element of spirit, depicted as a black egg. (See Tattva.)
Akashic Record
The idea that all of the experiences and memories of every living being are contained in the substance of the ether. “Stored-up cosmic memory. A level of time-consciousness within the astral plane which contains all the past events, thoughts, images, and activities of humanity from the beginning of time. This “chronicle of the world” can be accessed by the mystic and the magician. Advanced magicians develop the ability to recover details of past events by “reading” the Akashic Record.
A process of transformation, discipline, and purification. There are two types of alchemy which often overlap. Practical, laboratory, or outer alchemy is concerned with transforming a base material into a higher and more purified substance, such as the turning of lead into gold or the extraction of a medicinal substance from a plant in order to create a healing elixir. Spiritual, theoretical, or inner alchemy is concerned with the transformation of the human soul from a state of baseness to one of spiritual enlightenment. Alchemical texts are often full of allegory and mythological symbolism. “The Higher Alchymy then is almost identical with Religion, as distinct from theology. The function of Religion and the Great Work of the Alchymist is Spiritualization. The separation of the subtle from the gross; the redemption of spirit, while still seated in matter, from the taint inevitable to the lowest planes of manifestation.” –S.A. Altar diagrams
The 3=8 Diagram represents the establishment of life, i.e., created life, with the dragon coiled beneath Malkuth in the Kingdom of the Shells. The 4=7 Diagram represents the fall and the consequent rise of the dragon. FR #X. [M.K.G.]
Altar (Double-Cube)
In center of Hall. Emblem of visible Nature or the Material Universe, concealing within herself the mysteries of all dimensions, while revealing her surface to the exterior senses.It is a double cube, because, as the Emerald Tablet has said The things that are below are a reflection of the things that are above. The world of men and women created to unhappiness is a reflection of the World of Divine Beings created to Happiness. The Altar is black because, unlike Divine Beings who unfold in the Element of Light, the Fires of Created Beings arise from Darkness and Obscurity. 6:18. [M.K.G.]
A notariqon or acronym for the Hebrew phrase Adonai Melekh Na’amon, meaning “Lord, faithful King.” Its implied meaning is “so be it,” or “so mote it be.”
A magical object worn for protection.
One of three Greek divine names that surround the Triangle of Art. “Great God of all the Heavenly Hosts.” A high holy angel of God, Anaphaxeton was also a name for deity used by Aaron.
An entity within the divine hierarchy. A pure and high spirit of unmixed good in office and operation. Angels are anthropomorphic symbols of what we consider to be good or holy. Angels and archangels are considered specific aspects of God, each with a particular purpose and jurisdiction. The names of Qabalistic angels usually end in the suffixes “el” or “yah,” which are divine names of God, indicating that the angels themselves are “of God.” The word angel is derived from the Greek word angelos meaning “messenger.” ‘A being who executes commands and not one who originates, creates, and acts ‘de novo.’ FR #V “All the Shining Ones (whom we call Angels) are microcosms of the Macrocosm Yetzirah, even as Man is the microcosm of the Macrocosm of Assiah. All archangelic forms are microcosms of the Macrocosm of Briah, and the Gods of the Sephiroth are consequently the Microcosms of the Macrocosm of Atziluth.” 3:42. [M.K.G.]

Anima Mundi
“the Soul of the World.”
Animal Soul
See also Nephesch and Malkuth. ‘The spiritual powers will flourish only as you starve the animal soul, and the animal soul is largely dependent on the state and treatment of the animal body. Derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “water.” The Tattva associated with the element of water, depicted as silver crescent. (See Tattva.)
A ruling spirit traditionally associated with fire, though in modern times associated with air.
A notariqon or acronym used in Hexagram rituals. The word is formed from the first letters of the sentence: Achad Rosh Achdotho Rosh Ichudo Temurahzo Achad, which means, “One is His beginning, One is His individuality, His permutation is One.” It affirms that the ultimate divinity is unitary in nature.
A powerful angel who governs large groups or hosts of lesser angels. (See Angel.) According to some, archangels have free will, whereas angels do not.
Often referred to in Jungian psychology to mean an idea, mode of thought, or god-form that has manifested from the collective unconscious of humanity.
Hebrew word for “earth.” Hebrew word for “the element of Earth.” [Aleph (Fool), Resh (the Sun), Tzaddi (Aquarius = Man)] The totality of the manifestation of the Life-Power on this plane, having its source in Pure Spirit, its intermediate stage in the Sun, and its ultimate manifestation in Man. Found in Adonai Ha Aretz = “Lord of the Earth.” PFC-letter. [M.K.G.]
Arik Anpin
Hebrew for “long faced.” Also known as the “Vast Countenance” and Macroprosopus. The Partzuf attributed to Kether. (See Partzufim.)
Artificial Elemental
A simple entity or thought-form that is ritually created by the magician to fulfill a specific purpose.
“One thing is greatly insisted upon, and that is that we should not retire from the world, for we can succeed in perfecting ourselves in what is required of us without isolation.” FR #XXI. “Extreme ascetic habits may lead only to a contemplation of your own Heroism in being
abstinent. To be truly ascetic is indeed to submit to discipline and to curb unruly emotion, thought and actions. But, who is a slave to his animal soul, will practice vice even in a Forest; while he who restrains himself among the crowds of a city, and passes through a busy life—unpolluted, shows more resistance and suffers a severer discipline, and shall obtain a greater reward.” FR #II. Ash (or Ish)
Hebrew name for “fire.”
A Hebrew dialect used in Germany, Poland, and Russia.
Ash Mezareph
Hebrew phrase meaning “purifying fire.” The name of an alchemical- Qabalistic text contained within the Kabala Denudata, one of the first important translations of the Zohar. (See Zohar.)
The fourth of four Qabalistic worlds or stages of manifestation. Assiah is the dense world of action and matter. It is attributed to Malkuth and the element of earth. (See Four Worlds of the Qabalah.)
Assumption of Godforms
A magical technique wherein the Adept identifies him or herself with a particular deity by “assuming its form.” The archetypal image of the deity is created on the astral by focused visualization, vibration of the deity’s name, the tracing of its sigil, etc. The magician then steps into this astral image and wears it like a garment or mask, continuing to strengthen the image with focused concentration. This is performed in order to create a vehicle for that particular aspect of the Divine that the magician is working with. (See Godforms.)
From the Greek word astrum or “star.” That which belongs to the incorporeal level of being that is beyond the material or physical.
Astral Light
An omnipresent and all-permeating fluid or medium of extremely subtle matter, this Light is diffused throughout all space, interpenetrating and pervading every visible form and object.
Astral Plane
An intermediate and invisible level of reality between the physical plane and higher, more divine realms. It is the common boundary between the individual and noumenal reality. A non-physical level of existence which is the basis of the physical plane. The astral plane has several “layers” of density and vibrational rate. The upper astral lies close to the angelic realms, while the lower astral is the world of dreams and phantasms. The astral plane contains many non-physical entities. Sometimes characterized as a new and different ‘country’ or ‘ another world’. The Perception of the Astral Plane seems to be peculiarly liable to delusions, arising probably from defects in the sensorium or physical brain. These errors can be corrected by symbol [See Errors in Visioning.] FR #XXV. This plane may be described as a hall panelled with mirrors, where one is confronted with bewildering reflexes. Astral Projection (or Astral Traveling)
The practice of “traveling” out of the physical body in the astral planes. It is the transference of consciousness from the physical to the astral body, in a way that the practitioner perceives and moves about on the astral plane in the “body of light,” while the physical body remains inert. By using astral projection, the magician enters this world and interacts with angels, elementals, and other beings. Astral Projection in the Golden Dawn tradition can be described as a form of self-hypnosis which uses symbols as doorways in order to cause changes in consciousness. From these higher levels of consciousness, the magician often tries to see the underlying causes of things. Also called Travelling in the Spirit Vision. “Meaningful, extremely vivid, and completely coherent day-dreams in which the dreamer retains all his normal powers of choice, will-power and judgment. . . .The process used is best described as auto-hypnosis by means of a symbol.—it may be physically present, painted on a card, or … formulated in the imagination only—and persists in this until no other factor is consciously present in his thinking. He then, in his mind’s eye, deliberately transforms the symbol into a vast door (or sometimes a curtain, ornamented with the symbol), wills the door to swing open, passes though it in imagination, and allows the day-dream to commence. It is perhaps worth saying that most experimenters with this technique have found that the dream experienced bears a real relationship to the symbol used. . . .<King, 1987 #2> p. 65. ‘The Adept emits from his Ego a perceptible ray of his identity, and by cultured and instructed Will, sends it to travel to the place desired, focuses it there, see there—directly and not by reflection—perceives its bodily home, and re-enters it. The process may be caused to start also by a Symbol, or by Will alone; but anyway the Divine names should be used and relied upon. Scenes and things instead of being like a picture, have the third dimension, solidity, they stand out first like bas relief then you see as from a Balloon, by a bird’s eye view. You feel free to go to the place, to descend upon it, to step out upon the scene, and to be an actor there. This old Proverb enshrines a great truth: Believe thyself there and thou art there.’ (Usually there is no sense of reversal of objects as in simple Descrying.) FR #XI. Astral Sphere
An extended range of phenomena from which we can invoke symbols and forms. Also called Astral Plane or Astral World. [M.K.G.]
Astral Temple
A place of ritual working that is created on the astral plane through intense visualization and meditation. A physical temple is only a material reflection of the true, invisible temple.
Astral Traveling
(See Astral Projection.)
An ancient science that examines the action of celestial bodies upon all living beings, non-living objects, and earthly conditions, as well as their reactions to such influences. Whereas modern astronomy is considered an objective science of stellar distances, masses, and speeds, astrology is considered a subjective and intuitive science which not only deals with the astronomical delineation of horoscopes, but is also looked upon as a philosophy which helps explain the spiritual essence of life. The roots of astrology can be traced to ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia.
Atah (or Atoh)
Hebrew word meaning “Thou art.” Used in the Qabalistic Cross.
A furnace used in alchemy.
The first of four Qabalistic worlds or stages of manifestation. Atziluth is the divine world of archetypes. It is attributed to Kether and the element of fire. (See Four Worlds of the Qabalah.)
Greek word meaning “higher genius.” Usually refers to the HGA or Higher Self. It is the mediator between the individual and God. The word augoeides is derived from the Greek word augos or “morning light.” (See Higher Self; HGA.)
A shell or layer of astral substance which surrounds and permeates the physical body. Also called the Sphere of Sensation. (See Subtle Body). Akashic envelope that closely surrounds us. Contains the nine higher Sephiroth above Malkuth. ‘When we close the eyes of the body and sense upon the material world, we first apprehend by interior vision the essences of our own and contiguous natures—a source of error in clairvoyance.’ FR #XI. A word formed from the first and final letters of the Greek, Latin, and Hebrew alphabets thus: Alpha and Omega, A and Z, Aleph and Tau. It symbolizes the beginning and the end, or rather, the essence. Azoth is considered the Universal Medicine in alchemy. ‘A word formed from the initials and the final letters of the Latin, Greek and Hebrew Alphabets [AzΩ tav]. . . . It generally signifies Beginning and End, the Astral Light wherein are the elements and the philosophic mercury extracted from Sol; or it may mean Essence.’ (A.O. manuscript in the hand of Brodie-Innes, c. 1910.) The Hebrew Book of “Brilliance.” One of the oldest Qabalistic texts. It deals with meditative techniques. “Book of Light or Brilliance,” annon. c.1175,

A ritual designed to get rid of unwanted spiritual energies. Banishings are usually a prelude to more complex rituals. ‘Banish the influence of anyone else who made

Barbarous Names
Words and names of deities that are frequently used in medieval grimoires. These names often originated as deity names from ancient civilizations, which have been corrupted through scribal error. The word barbarous comes from the Greek word barbaros meaning “non-Greek, foreign.” Many of the so-called barbarous names originated as Greek versions of more ancient Hebrew, Egyptian, and Babylonian names. Modern magicians believe that through centuries of ritual use, these names have taken on a magical potency of their own, regardless of their origins. A good example of the use of barbarous names can be found in the Bornless Ritual of the Golden Dawn.
Ben Adam
The Son of Man. The synthesis of the Ruach of the Universe. [M.K.G.]
Beni Elohim
Hebrew for “Sons of the Gods” or “Children of the Gods.” The group of angels assigned to Hod.
Apply to Mercury if your find Deception of Lying or intellectual untruth when traveling in the Spirit Vision. Formulate the Hebrew letter Beth in Whiteness. [M.K.G.]
Hebrew word for “understanding,” referring to the third Sephirah on the Tree of Life.
To bind, restrict, or secure the obedience of a spirit through the authority of Divine names and the threat of punishment. A symbol may be used to seal the binding, and the spirit may be confined to a specific area or object.
Enochian name for the spirit of fire, taken from the Tablet of Union.
Black Magic
Magic performed with a negative intent or purpose. Negative or harmful magic, the end result of which has nothing to do with the Great Work or spiritual growth. Corrupt magic that is performed for evil purposes or involves malicious actions or entities. Satanism and neo-nazi occultism are forms of occultism that regularly employ black magic for selfish or evil goals. According to Regardie, black magic is to be scrupulously avoided by the true Theurgist. According to C. G. Harrison in The Transcendental Universe, the black magician’s hand “is against every man, and every man’s hand is against him. While the black magician seeks to strengthen his own powers to dominate others, the ‘white’ occultist on the other hand aims to develop his individuality to serve others, while leaving them free. No genuine esoteric teacher in this age will ever exert the slightest authority over the free will of the pupil. In contrast to black magic, ‘white’ magic is characterised by strict fidelity to the truth, respect for all men’s freedom, and a striving for the perfection of the world . . .”
The left-hand or black pillar of King Solomon’s Temple. The feminine Pillar of Severity on the Tree of Life. Together the Pillars of Boaz and Jachin symbolize the polarized forces of night and day, strength and mercy, active and passive. Boaz is represented by the black pillar in the Hall of the Neophytes. Body of Light
The astral body, or etheric double. (See Subtle Body.) Often used to describe a ritually constructed vehicle for astral traveling.
Book of the Dead
Literal title, “The Chapters of Coming-Forth-by-Day.” An ancient Egyptian collection of funerary texts compiled during the sixteenth century b.c.e., consisting of spells and magic formulæ placed in tombs to protect and aid the deceased in the afterlife. The collection included the Coffin Texts (2000 b.c.e), the Pyramid Texts (2400 b.c.e), and other writings. German Egyptologist Karl Lepsius published the first compilation of texts in 1842 and gave the collection its present name.
Bornless Invocation
A potent ritual of Theurgy used by the Adepts of the Golden Dawn. (See Regardie, The Golden Dawn, pages 442–446.) The whole formulae . . . are intended to create a magical link between the Sun, as the Light of Nature, and the Order (to be celebrated within 48 hours of the Sun’s actual entry into Aries or Libra). As it heralds the initiation of a fresh current, the old password is

A Greek synonym for “Babylonian.” Similar to the name of the Assyrian Kaldu, which was part of Babylonia. In the Book of Daniel, the word is used to indicate a class of wise men. The word Chaldæan eventually came to mean an elite group of prophets, seers, astrologers, and alchemists.
Chaldean Oracles
Fragments from an oracular text brought to Rome by Julianus the magician in the second century c.e. These fragments, reputed to have been written by Zoroaster, are said to contain sacred doctrines and philosophies of the ancient Babylonian priests, which have come down to us through Greek translations. Paraphrased in Neoplatonic literature and philosophy, the Oracles form an important part of the literature of the Western Esoteric Tradition.

Chayoth ha-Qadesh
Hebrew for “Holy Living Creatures.” The group of angels assigned to Kether.
Cherubim (or Kerubim)
Hebrew for “the Strong Ones.” The group of angels assigned to Yesod.
Hebrew word for “mercy,” referring to the fourth Sephirah on the Tree of Life. Also called Gedulah which means “greatness, magnificence.” Site of the various occupations under Jupiter in the Microcosm. FR #XXI. “Loving kindness,” the fourth sefirah. Mercy. Compassion. In Qabalah, the part of the soul located in Chokmah. It is described as the life force, divine will, and source of action. Essential Will which is the creative impulse of
the Yechidah (Kether), through which the latter obtains its self-realisation. Alloted to Chokmah. The genius which stands in the presence of the Holy One=the Yechidah=the Divine Self, which stands, as it were, before the Synthetical God of all things. See Neschamah. FR #X. [M.K.G.]

Christian Rosenkreutz
(Christian of the Rosy Cross) The allegorical founder of the Brotherhood of the Rose Cross. Sometimes referred to as C. R. C. (See Rosicrucian.) Born in 1379 and dying in 1484 a life of 106 years was apparently the term of his physical manifestation. FR #105 for more. [M.K.G.]
To walk around in a circle, especially as part of a ritual.
Circumambulation, Reverse

The power of hearing sounds which the world cannot hear. It is often a definite sound sent for a definite purpose. FR #XIX [M.K.G.]
The ability to be aware of events or facts by psychic means, usually received as visual images. From the French clairvoyant, “clear-sighted.” The ability of a seer, diviner, or skryer to see persons and events which are distant in time or place, using methods other than the normal mundane senses. (Sometimes refered to as ESP or extra-sensory perception.) Clairvoyance may or may not include the use of objects such as crystals, magic mirrors, or magical symbols as aids for enhancing one’s abilities of perception. (See Skrying.)
Clavicula Solomonis
The “Key of Solomon,” also called the Greater Key of Solomon the King. An important grimoire of planetary magic dating from the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The focus of the Greater Key is on the invocation of higher spiritual beings such as planetary archangels and angels. It also includes instruction on how to create and consecrate planetary talismans.
The name of an Enochian governor.
Cone of Reception
Energy force built up by the Operator of a magical work, partly from his own Nephesch and partly from the surrounding atmosphere. In the operation of the ‘Ring and Disc’, the Disc is its base, while the truncated summit thereof is at the point of suspension of the Ring where the thread thereof passeth betwen the thumb and finger of the Operator. A second cone is then mentally formulated, taking the form of an inverted cone rising from the point of suspension of the Ring, so that there will be built up in the astral light a form somewhat resembling an hourglass. The upper inverted cone receives the impressions which the hands translates into action in the lower cone as the expression of these ideas. An uninitiated person would almost certainly open a conical receptacular funnel into the ‘sphere of sensation’ [of him or her] thus preparing a ready path unto obsession, or self-deception. If care is not taken the cone of reception will attract any passing intelligence or Force.’ Ritual Beth. [M.K.G.]
Confessio Fraternitatis R.C. Ad Erudotos Europa
A supplement to the Fama claiming the reader whould find ‘incorporated in our Confession thirty-seven reasons of our purpose and intention, the which according to thy pleasure thou mayest seek out and compare together, considering within thyself if they be sufficient to allure thee’. To make sacred. A ritual dedication of a person or object to a specific purpose. In the Golden Dawn, the officer known as
the Dadouchos consecrates with a Censer of incense.
A Hellenized form of late Egyptian language. The Coptic alphabet is similar to the Greek alphabet but with the addition of seven letters derived from Demotic. Unlike Greek, Coptic has no distinction between upper and lower case letters.
Three-fold cord bound about the waist = three-fold bondage of Mortality. The Soul bound into earthly or material inclination. 6:18. Also used to bind astral entities during a ritual. [M.K.G.]
Corpus Christi
Ceremony in which a senior representing the Third, or Invisible, Order restores the oath formerly taken upon the Cross on Corpus Christi Day. “It is easy to understand why Corpus Christi was chosen for this ceremony. It was the festival upon which Christian Rosencreutz had called the annual convocation of members. Also it had a special symbolic value. Corpus Christi honors the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist; in other word, the transfiguration of matter, and by analogy the transfiguration of earth and man. In the fifteenth century the gorgeous processions of the Host were regularly followed by miracle plays and mysteries.” V. Moore, The Unicorn, p. 459. [M.K.G.]

Cross, Red

Hebrew word for “knowledge.” The so-called “Invisible Sephirah” on the Tree of Life, Daath is not really a Sephirah, but rather a conjunction of the energies of Chokmah and Binah. It can be likened to a passageway across the Abyss. The Threshold of one’s Divine Consciousness. Site of the Prophets (as Inspired Priests) and Magicians. FR #XXI [M.K.G.]
A female Dadouchos.
Greek word meaning “torch bearer.” An officer in the Neophyte Hall who performs consecrations. 0=0 Ritual: Stationed at the South, symbolized heat and dryness. Duty is to attend to the censer and the incense, and assist in the purification and consecration by Fire of the Hall, of the Members, and of the Candidate. 6:5. [M.K.G.]
Daimon (or Daemon)
Greek for “spirit.” Any spirit, whether divine, good, or natural. Used to describe all manner of nature spirits and divine entities. In ancient theurgy, it is often used to describe one’s Higher Self. An intermediary, guardian spirit that acts as a counselor between human beings and God. The philosopher Socrates was said to have been guided by his daemon. According to Plato, the daemon was the nous or divine mind in every human. In later times, the word demon was created from the original word and used to indicate evil spirits.
Apply to Venus if you find you are enticed to pleasure when traveling in the Spirit Vision. Formulate the Hebrew letter Daleth in Whiteness. [M.K.G.]
Dark Night of the Soul
A phrase used to describe the depression, isolation, and alienation which is experienced by mystics and magicians just before attaining spiritual transcendence and enlightenment. The sixteenth century Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross used this term to describe the extreme desolation which epitomized the eighth stage of his ten stages of spiritual ascent.
a ten degree division of the Zodiac. In the standard Zodiacal wheel, there are a total of 36 decanates.
A God or Goddess. A spiritual being embodying one or several aspects of divine essence.
A corrupt form of the word daemon. Unlike daemon (or daimon), which is mainly used to indicate a divine entity, the word demon is often used to imply only an evil spirit. An evil spirit or unbalanced force. (See Qlippoth.)
In a clockwise or sunwise direction. The usual direction of movement in a ceremony. (See Widdershins.)
(See also Scrying.) In this Simple Spirit Vision or ‘clairvoyance’ note that you see objects reversed, as to right and left, for which suitable allowance must be made. You project, in this process, part of your own nerve and spirit force upon the symbol, and by this you attract and attach to it more akashic force from the environment, hence the results obtained. The state of cleaving to God. “Communion” usually with the Divine Realm. [M.K.G.]
Based on the Latin word divinatio which means “the faculty of foreseeing.” The word comes from the Latin term for “divine power” or “of the gods.” Divination is the art of uncovering the divine meaning behind chance events. In the Golden Dawn it is used as a tool for psychic well-being and spiritual growth. There are various methods of divination, including cartomancy (reading tarot cards) and geomancy (earth divination). Requires ‘a concentration of mind and of the vital and astral forces of the operator upon the subject matter.’‘Furnish the physical with symbols of protection and power, and the astral form with the astral counterpart of their insignia and implements.’ FR #XXVIII. “A divination shall be as a sacred work of the Divine Magic of Light, and not to be performed to pander unto thy curiosity regarding the secrets of another.” 3:5. “Unto the Letter Vau belong Divination in all its branches; and the art of making the Link between the subject of the work and the process of divination.” 6:32 “The more rigidly correct and in harmony with the scheme of the Universe is any form of Divination, so much the more is it likely to yield a correct and reliable answer to the enquirer. A name associated with a deity or an aspect of God that is vibrated or intoned during ritual.
Divine Self
Our true, pure, transcendent self which contains a spark of divinity.
Dogmatic Qabalah
That segment of the Qabalah which deals with the study of ancient Qabalistic texts such as the written Torah or Pentateuch, the Zohar, the Bahir, and the Sephir
Yetzirah. (See Qabalah.)



One of the four magical elements. Earth is said to be a combination of the qualities of cold and dryness. It is considered passive,
feminine, solid, physical, stable, slow-moving, and grounded. (See Elements.)
Earth Pentacle
one of the Elemental weapons or implements of the Adept. Used to invoke or banish the element of earth.
Edomite Kings
The forces of restriction. They are not altogether evil, but are partly connected with Evil. FR #X. [M.K.G.]
That portion of the psyche which is conscious, most directly governs thought and behavior, and is most concerned with outer reality. Also called the conscious self.
From a Greek word meaning “watcher.” A thought-form created by will and visualization. A group egregore is the distinctive energy of a specific group of magicians who are working together, creating and building the same thought-form or energy-form.
Hebrew word meaning “I am.” Divine name associated with Kether. A name intoned in the west in the LBRP, and also used with the active spirit pentagrams in the SIRP.
An image of an ideal. From the Greek word eidos, “form, idea.” An image that is either created in the material world or formulated on the astral, designed to represent the character of a god or other spiritual entity.
El (or Al)
Hebrew word meaning “god.” Divine name associated with Chesed.
In magic there are four basic elements (fire, water, air, and earth) which are regarded as realms, kingdoms, or divisions of nature. They are the basic modes of existence and action, and the building blocks of everything in the universe. A fifth element, spirit, is said to bind together and govern the lesser four. In the Mystic Repast of the Neophyte Ceremony, the rose, fire, chalice of wine, and bread and salt are symbols of the elements.
A spirit belonging to the nature of the elements, having hierarchies similar to those of angels and archangels. An elemental spirit is composed entirely of one element.
Elemental Grades
Next four rituals after the Neophyte, taken from the cipher manuscripts and attributed to, respectively, Earth, the Moon and Air, Mercury and water and Venus and Fire. The ceremonies in question were designed to equilibriate in the mind of the candidate the factors symbolised by the Four Elements; one modern authority has referred to them as being’ a sort of ceremonial psychoanalysis combined with a crash-course in occult theory.’ <#88> p. 98. Elemental Spirits
(See Elemental) The Elemental Spirits and other of their kind are an organisation not quite so complete as man. In spiritual consciousness more keen, and yet in some ways his spiritual superior though organically his inferior. They are the formers of the primal Man, that is the Elementary Man, and they have other and greater offices, for in them are many worlds and ranks and spheres. They are as the younger man (i.e. child) and towards them also is Man responsible, and he hath wrought them much injustice. [M.K.G.]
Elemental Tablets
Four charts stemming from the Enochian skryings of John Dee and Edward Kelly. They contain several rows of letters and are assigned to the four elements of fire, water, air, and earth. The names of numerous angels, archangels, and spiritual entities are derived from the letters on these charts. The Elemental Tablets play an important role in the Outer Order ceremonies of the Golden Dawn and are used in the higher magical workings of the Second Order. The four tablets are said to be bound together and ruled by the Tablet of Union. (See Enochian; Tablet of Union.)
Elemental Weapons
The four personal implements of an Adept, used in ceremonial magic and associated with the elements. The include the Fire Wand, the Water Cup, the Air Dagger, and the Earth Pentacle. Also called Four Magical Implements. Wand, Cup, Sword, Pentacle. When all four are present they preserve ‘a certain Balance and Harmony in the sphere of your aura.’ Hold any one of them (with concentrated idea) when trying to form an estimate of the strength of the corresponding force in any detail of your work or to secure physical or astral power and intensity of that character or to preserve your own natural equilibrium.’ FR #XXVIII. ‘It is of advantage to practice clairvoyance with the aid of the presence before you of the four Magical Implements, and even to hold the one suitable to the investigation.’ FR #XI. Eleusinian Mysteries
The Eleusinian Mysteries were the most famous and secretive of the ancient mystery religions. The rites at Eleusis (near Athens) originated in the story of the goddess Demeter and her search for her daughter Persephone. The Eleusinian Mysteries began with the journey of the mystai or initiates in a ceremonial procession from Athens to Eleusis to the Telesterion, or Hall of Initiation. The exact nature of the rites performed there remains unknown.

Elixir of Life
Derived from the Philosopher’s Stone of the alchemists. The universal medicine. It is said to confer immortality and restore youth.
Hebrew word meaning “god(s),” which is associated with the fire pentagram in the SIRP. Found in two texts: 1) Exodus XXXII:1 when Moses
had gone to seek God, the Israelites said to Aaron: ‘Make us Elohim which shall go before us.’ or let us make Gods to help us, to form our ideals. 2) Genesis I:26 ‘And the Elohim said let us make man . . . in our image
and after our likeness.’ The men cried let us make gods—The Gods said let us make men. We are here seeking gods, or divine ideals;—and we are making men; for men make themselves and they make their own gods. Let us then make Man—make the Divine Man out of the Human Man. Elohim Gibor
Hebrew phrase meaning “Almighty God.” Divine name associated with Geburah.
Elohim Tzabaoth
Hebrew phrase meaning “God of Armies.” Divine name associated with Hod.
Emerald Tablet, The
One of the oldest of all alchemical texts, dating from the second to third centuries b.c.e. The Tabula Smaragdina or Emerald Tablet is said to have been written by Hermes Trismegistus. Source of the often quoted phrase “As above, so below.” (See Hermes Trismegistus.)
Enoch (or Henoch)
“He who walked with God.” Hebrew prophet said to be the seventh master of the world after Adam. (See Enochian.)
A genuine language and a system of magic that was discovered by Dr. John Dee (1527-1608) who was a magician, philosopher, astrologer, and advisor to Queen Elizabeth, and his assistant Edward Kelly. The Enochian system was received through the crystal skryings of Kelly, under Dee’s
supervision. The system was described as the “language of the angels” or the “language of Enoch,” and came to be called the Enochian or Angelic language. Enochian magic is a complex system of elemental and spiritual hierarchies, which was further developed by the Golden Dawn.
Enochian Alphabet
Consists of 21 letters used in the Enochian Language. ‘Of the nature of sigils and can therefore be better employed for magical purposes than our ordinary Roman characters. . . . One or more of these letters being placed on the particular square employed in a vision, instead of the Roman letter will aid the skyring power by compelling the force of concentration on to the one square in question and no other.’ FR #XXXI. Enochian Keys or Calls
Nineteen invocations received by Dee and Kelley, designed to be used with various parts of the squares received. Thus the third, seventh, eighth and ninth Keys are used in connection with the Tablet of Air (Eastern Quadrangle); the third used in the invocation of Air itself and the other three Keys with, respectively, Water of Air, Earth of Air, and Fire of Air. <#2> p. 262. Enochian Language
A real language with definite traces of grammar and syntax, and not a mere gibberish, according to Francis King. <#2> p. 261. ‘Has its origin in the Egyptian and its close resemblance to the Ethiopic.’ FR #XXXI. The language of the Angels. [M.K.G.]
Enochian Squares
(Enochian Tablets) Five are of much greater importance than the remainder. They are: 1) the ‘Great Eastern Quadrangle of Air’, 2) the ‘Great Western Quadrangle of Water’ 3) the ‘Great Northern Quadrangle of Earth’, 4) the ‘Great Southern Quadrangle of Fire,’ and 5) the ‘Tablet of Union,’ sometimes referred to as the ‘Quadrangle of Spirit’. 1-4 are divided into 156 squares, 5 is divided into 20 squares from which are derived certain Divine and Angelic names. Each Tablet is also sub-divided into four other Tablets attributed to the Elements (Earth of Fire, etc.) <#2> p. 262-263. [M.K.G.]
Study well that Great Arcanum, the proper equilibrium of mercy and severity, for either unbalanced is not good; unbalanced severity is cruelty and oppression; unbalanced mercy is but weakness and would permit evil to exist unchecked, thus making itself as it were the accomplice of that evil. 6:19. Error in Visioning
If an error appears in a vision build up the appropriate Hebrew letter in brilliant white light in front of any image which you suspect, and if it is not true it will cause that image to disappear. If the error is in memory, the sober and steadying influence of Tau/Saturn will cause a memory picture to disappear. Similarly Beth for Mercury will cause to vanish any product of lying intellectual delusion. Daleth for Venus is used for the result of intellectual vanity. Gimel for Luna for a wavering mind. Resh for the Sun for delusions of haughtiness, vanity, etc. Kaph for the path of Juptier against imagination. Peh for the path of Mars against revenge, hatred, etc. FR #XXV. [M.K.G.]>

Eucharist of the Four Elements
A rite at the end of the Neophyte ritual —all present one by one, inhale the perfume of a rose, to represent Air, warm their hands over a lamp, thus partaking of ‘Elemental Fire,’ eat bread and salt, symbolising Earth, and finally, drink wine—elemental water. <#88> p. 98. A ritual designed to manifest or “evoke” a spiritual entity from the invisible realms into the magician’s field of awareness or visible appearance (whether physically or on the astral). Sometimes called “summoning spirits.”
From the Latin evocare, “to call.” To call forth a spiritual force or entity. According to some traditions, this means calling forth a force from outside of the psyche. (See Invoke.)
Enochian name for the spirit of air, taken from the Tablet of Union.
Public, outward, outer.
The outward form of religious doctrine, as opposed to esotericism.



Fall, The
Cut away the higher from the lower sephiroth in Daath. Was our descent into this life from that Upper and Higher Soul. Our object is to get into contact with that Higher Soul again, which is only to be done through the Neschamah. FR #X. [M.K.G.]
Fama Fraternitatis
Or a Discovery of the most laudable Order of the Rosy Cross the publication of which took place at Cassel in 1614, though this tract is dated 1610. FR #XVI. [M.K.G.]
One of the four magical elements. Fire is said to be a combination of the qualities of heat and dryness. It is considered active, masculine, spontaneous, quick, initiating, vitalizing, and energetic. (See Element.)
Fire Wand
One of the Elemental Weapons or implements of the Adept. Used to invoke or banish the element of fire.
Flashing Colours
‘Tablets [Tattvas] and Telesmas are described as being made in Flashing Colours, when in one tablet, a certain colour and its direct complementary are shown in opposition and shine by contrast. In such tablets do the elemental forces manifest most readily . . . They attract and reflect the rays of light from the akashic plane enveloping them.’ FR #XI. [M.K.G.]
Flying Rolls
A term used for Second Order side lectures.
Influences beyond the material world (usually from the Astral). The only way to avoid being controlled by such forces is to preserve what we call the positive attitude, which is the extreme contrast to what is called mediumship. FR #XIX. [M.K.G.]
Formula of the Magic of Light
The practical magic of the Golden Dawn as classified under the five letters of the Pentagrammaton–YHShVH. Evocations and invocations fall under the category of the Hebrew letter Yod and the element of Fire. Consecrations of Talismans and the production of natural phenomena are classified under the second letter Heh and the element of water. All works of spiritual development, and transformations are attributed to the letter Shin and the element of spirit. All works of divination are assigned to the letter Vav and the element of air. All works of alchemy are classified under the final letter Heh and the element of earth. (See Pentagrammaton.)
Four-fold Breath
A method of rhythmic breathing used prior to meditation and ritual. (Breath in to the count of four; hold the breath to the count of four; exhale to the count of four; keep the lungs empty to the count of four.)
Four Worlds of the Qabalah
A four-fold division of the Tree of Life which separates the Tree into four levels of manifestation. The highest level is the most abstract and ethereal, while the lowest level is the most dense. The Four Worlds include Atziluth, Briah, Yetzirah, and Assiah.
Fylfot Cross
Used during the Zelator 1=10 initiation. Also known as the Hermetic Cross, the Swastika, the Hammer of Thor and the Talisman of the Armes. It is formed of seventeen squares taken from a square of twenty-five squares, and refers to the Sun, the Zodiac and the four Elements. [M.K.G.]



Hebrew for “Strength of God.” Hebrew archangel of elemental Water, invoked in the LBRP and the SIRP. Also the name of the archangel of Yesod and the Moon.
Hebrew word meaning “whirling.” The plural form is galgalim, referring to the Sephiroth as they exist within the human aura or sphere of sensation. The galgalim are the western equivalent of the eastern chakras.

Geburah (or Gevurah)
Hebrew word for “power.” Often referred to as “severity,” Geburah is the fifth Sephirah on the Tree of Life. The phrase ve-Geburah, meaning “and the power” is used in the Qabalistic Cross. Hebrew word for “greatness, magnificence.” A title of Chesed. The phrase ve-Gedulah, meaning “and the glory” is used in the Qabalistic Cross.
Part of the Literal Qabalah, gematria is a form of Hebrew numerology that uses the numerical values of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Names or words are converted into numbers in order to find hind meanings. Words which have the same numerical value are thought to have an important and significant relationship. Numerology. Every Hebrew letter has a numerological value, and by adding the sum of letters in words the esotericist can weave and interrelate concepts and terms. [M.K.G.]

Elemental spirits of earth.
A word derived from the Greek gnostikos, meaning one who has acquired gnosis or “knowledge”—(literally, “one who knows.”) Any of several Gnostic sects which flourished in the Mediteranean world during the time of Christ particularly during the second and third centuries c.e. and for many centuries after. The two major branches of Gnosticism were Sethian or Jewish Gnosticism, and Valentinian or Christian Gnosticism. Gnostics believed in a fundamental dualism between the spiritual world of the highest transcendent God and the material world of the evil creator god or demiurge. The transcendent god was believed to intercede in the material world by offering his followers a means by which they could attain gnosis—by providing a redeemer or savior such as Christ or Sophia. Gnostics also shared an emphasis on the redeeming power of esoteric spiritual knowledge that is acquired directly through divine revelation.
Gnothi Seauton
Greek for “Know Thyself.” Maxim inscribed above the door to the temple of Apollo at Delphi. It implies knowledge of one’s relationship with the divine cosmos.
Gods (or Deities)
Powerful immortal beings of high rank in the spiritual hierarchies. They command lesser spirits and have been worshiped by humans for centuries. The various celestial and terrestrial gods are often seen as specific portions or expressions of the transcendent God.
An archetypal image of a god or goddess that is constructed by visualization on the astral plane. (See Assumption of Godforms.) In the rituals, the Astral shells of the Gods are brought in and vivified by the officer who corresponds with their energy, i.e.: Hierophant=Osiris. Imperator=Nephthys. Praemonstrator=Isis. The universal and divine essence which is the source of all.
Derived from a word that means “howling or “sorcery”. Part of the grimoire known as The Lesser Key of Solomon, with instructions for the evocation of spirits.
Grade 5=6
The principle symbolism chiefly centres around the discovery and opening of the Vault of Christian Rosycross. [M.K.G.]
Grade 6=5
Based on the 120 years of silence following the death of Christian Rosycross. It is a degree of death and solemnity—referring to the precedent stage of obscuration, during which silent study and meditation may be considered as the typical condition. [M.K.G.]
Grade 7=4
Based on the life of Christian Rosycross, Adeptus Exemptus refers to the higher and more exalted rank and attainments of him who founded the Rosicrucian Order, as a new formulation of that Occult philosophy or Wisdom Religion. [M.K.G.]

Great Work
A term borrowed from alchemy’s magnum opus. Refers to the path of human spiritual evolution, growth, and illumination, which is the goal of ceremonial magic.
A magical text or “grammar.” Any medieval book containing magical procedures or spells for summoning spirits.
Grip (or Token)
Marks grade in Order. Neophyte = seeking for guidance in darkness; see 6:17. [M.K.G.]
The lowest part of the soul, centered in Malkuth. A low level of subconscious intelligence which is closely tied to the physical body.

Greek word meaning “guide.” A main officer in the Neophyte Hall, who guides the candidate around the temple. In Neophyte Ritual: Stationed between the two pillars of Hermes and Solomon facing the cubical altar of the Universe. Duties: Presides over the symbolic gateway of Occult Science. Reconciles between light and darkness. Follows Kerux in circumambulations. Superintends the preparation of the Candidate. Leads him through the path of darkness into light. Assists in his reception. Aids other officers in the execution of their duties. Wears white robe symbolizing purity. Ensign of office: The mitre-headed sceptre symbolizing Religion, to guide and regulate life. Office symbolizes those higher aspirations of the soul, which should guide its actions. 6:6. “Hekas, Hekas, este Bebeloi”
A magical phrase originally uttered at the Eleusinian Mysteries which means “far, far away be the profane.” In the Golden Dawn, this phrase is used to indicate that a ritual is about to begin.
“Palaces,” or Halls of God’s palace. A central motif of early visionary mysticism during the Talmudic era centered around the ascent of the mystic through a series of palaces to a final Throne room, where the divine Glory and Its retinue are situated. (See Merkavah.) [M.K.G.]
Hermes Trismegistus, or “Hermes the Thrice-Great”
The Greek God Hermes and the Egyptian God Thoth merged into one figure who was said to be the first and greatest magician. Hermes Trismegistus was reputed to be an ancient Egyptian priest and magician who was credited with writing forty-two books collectively known as the Hermetic literature.
These books, including the Emerald Tablet and the Divine Pymander, describe the creation of the universe, the soul of humanity, and the way to achieve spiritual rebirth.
Of, or relating to, Hermes Trismegistus or the works ascribed to him. Having to do with the occult sciences, especially alchemy, astrology, and magic that are derived from western sources (Egyptian, Judeo-Christian, and Graeco-Roman).
A geometric figure which has six points, formed from two interlocking triangles. The two triangles correspond to opposing forces of fire and water. The Hexagram shows these rival energies balanced and in harmony with each other. Also called the “Star of David” and the “Star of the Macrocosm.” It is also a symbol of the perfected human being, and signifies the Hermetic principle of “as above, so below.” In the Golden Dawn, Hexagram rituals are used to invoke or banish planetary forces. Two interlocking triangles overlapping in opposition. Consists of two forms Fire and Water;— i.e. the ideal Fire and the ideal Water; the Spirit and the Water of Creation,—the spiritual Ether and the Ethereal Fire (the Fire of the Holy Spirit). FR #X. Higher Self
A personification of the transcendent spiritual self that is said to reside in Tiphareth and mediate between the Divine Self and the Lower Personality. Sometimes referred to as the Holy Guardian Angel, the Lower Genius, and the Augoeides. The link with the Truth of Life. The Christ Within. FR #XXI. ‘It is the Higher Self which receives prompting from Higher Powers at those times when the Lower Self is set aside, and when the interference of Elementary and Qlipothic forces is provided against.’ FR #XXVIII. Hodos Chamelionis
Path of the Chameleon—the knowledge of the colours of the forces which lie beyond the physical universe. 3:31. Lecture details of the Rainbow Colors of the Queen Scale Sephiroth, coloring to be used by the Adeptus Minor. The Bow [Qesheth] is of brilliant and perfect colour, whose analysis and synthesis yield others of the same scale, and hence is this entitled “The Book of the Path of the Chameleon”—that Path, namely which ascendeth alone through the force of Qesheth, the Bow [Temperance card or Hebrew letter Samekh as path from Yesod to Tiphareth, therefore up the middle pillar]. 3:31. To climb this path one must work with the Forces of Qesheth the Bow, that is: the Sephiroth being in the feminine or Queen’s scale [Briah, Cups, Heh, Water] and the Paths in the masculine or King’s scale [Atziluth, Wands, Yod, Fire]. 3:32. It thus represents the forces of Atziluth in the Paths uniting the Sephiroth as reflected in the Briatic World, one of the possible arrangements of the powers inherent in YOD HE of the Great Name. 3:32. It is absolutely indispensable when considering the colouring of the Vault.-I.R. 8:32. The colours of the Paths and the Sephiroth form a mutal balance and harmony on the Tree. Colours are Forces, the Signatures of the Forces; and the Child of the children of the Forces art thou. And therefore about the Throne of the Mighty One is a Rainbow of Glory, and at His Feet is the Crystal Sea. But there are many other attributions of colour also, seeing that the respective rays meet and blend with each other. And therefore do I greet thee with the Mystic Title of Hodos Chamelionis, the Path of the Chamelion, the Path of Mixed Colours. 7:55. Holy Guardian Angel
A term used by Abramelin to describe the Higher Self. A being attached to, or portion each individual, that serves as a guardian or guide. (See Higher Self)
Holy Spirit
Ruach Qadesh. The mysterious power of God, conceived of as the mode of God’s activity, manifested especially in a supernatural manner or revelation to certain individuals. The third person of the Christian Trinity.
Image of the Darkness, Of Ignorance, of Mortality that has blinded men to the Happiness and Beauty their eyes once looked upon. 6:18. [M.K.G.]
“Great Angel of the Tarot” or “Great Guardian Angel,” who is set over the Operation of the Secret Wisdom: “And I saw a strong Angel proclaiming with a loud voice, ‘Who is worthy to open the Books and to loose the [seven] seals thereof?’” This Great Angel is to be invoked in clairvoyance and divination to increase spiritual perception. The supreme God of the Gnostics, equivalent to the Tetragrammaton of the Hebrews. In the Golden Dawn, the letters of the name IAO are used to represent Isis, Apophis, and Osiris, or the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

“Imagination is the Creative Faculty of the human mind, the plastic energy—the Formative Power. . . Imagination must be distinguished from Fancy. It must be an orderly and intentional mental process, and result.” “When a man imagines he actually creates a form on the Astral or even on some higher plane; and this form is as real and objective to intelligent beings on that plane, as our earthly surroundings are to us. . .. It must be vitalized to be used for good or evil by Will. The Spirit is the master, imagination the tool; and the body the plastic material. A female Imperator.
Implies a “new beginning.” A person who has undergone initiation into a magical group. The act of initiating a new member into a magical group.
A ceremony, ritual, test, or period of instruction with which a new member is admitted to an organization or level of attainment.
An important acronym in both orthodox religion and in magic. The initials of a Latin phrase once placed by the Romans at the top of the Cross which stood for Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judecorum, or “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” Medieval alchemists theorized that it meant Igne Natura Renovatur Integra or “the whole of nature is renewed by fire,” or Igne Nitrum Raris Invenitum – “shining is rarely found in fire.” Masonic author J.S.M. Ward attributed the initials to the first letters of certain Hebrew words used to describe the four elements (I – Yam – Water; N – Nour – Fire; R – Ruach – Air; I – Yebeshah – Earth). INRI is known as the “Keyword” and is used in the Golden Dawn’s Inner Order to describe the cycle of the seasons; the equinoxes and solstices, as well as the cycles of birth, death, and rebirth (I – Yod – Virgo; N – Nun – Scorpio; R – Resh – the Sun; I – Yod – Virgo).
A term derived from angelic beings described in the Chaldæan Oracles. An angelic or spiritual force that acts as a guiding power. The angelic force of a planet that is said to control the “blind” force of a planetary spirit.
Introspection [self-analysis]
During the waiting period between Portal and Second Order Initiation the aspirant was supposed to devote much of his time to an introspective process of self-analysis described as follows:— ‘The Aspirant. . . must acknowledge his debt to evolution through which has been perfected the instrument wherein his mind words and gathers material. Then through meditation he is led to see himself as not only self conscious—as one who receives impressions—one who criticises and watches . . . but, standing outside himself, he now becomes one who endeavours to sense how his mask appears to others—sees himself as part of the consciousness of others, as one who impresses, one who is criticized and watched. . . . ‘He will reflect on words and the power of words. . . the magic, both good and evil, of human communion by words, he will begin to grasp why the Order reiterates the importance of silence. The magical act of withdrawing from the exterior environment in such a way that other people fail notice the magician’s presence, or immediately forget that they have seen the magician.
A ritual or portion of a ritual designed to establish communication with a higher spiritual entity. The magician allows a higher being to use his physical body as a vehicle for communication with the physical world. A potent prayer used to invoke a deity.
To call a spiritual entity or force into the temple. To call the power or presence of a higher spiritual entity into the psyche.
Hebrew for “the Beauty of God.” The Intelligence of Jupiter.



The right-hand or white pillar of King Solomon’s Temple. The masculine Pillar of Mercy on the Tree of Life. Together the Pillars of Boaz and Jachin symbolize the polarized forces of night and day, strength and mercy, active and passive. Jachin is represented by the white pillar in the Hall of the Neophytes. (See Boaz; Pillar of Mercy.)
Judging Others
The Ritual says ‘therefore art though inexcusable, whoever thou art, who judgest another.’ You are not to endeavour to seek grievances against your fellows, or seek to rule or supervise them, unless you happen to be in authority over them. FR #XIX. [M.K.G.]

Greek word meaning “herald.” An officer
in the Neophyte Hall who leads circumambulations and gives announcements. In Neophyte Ritual: Stationed within the Portal of the Hall. Duty: sees that all furniture is properly arranged. Guards the inner side of the Portal. Assists in the reception of Candidates. Attends to the Lamp of the office. Leads the mystic circumambulation. Makes all announcements and reports. A female Keryx.
Hebrew word for “crown,” referring to the first Sephirah on the Tree of Life. The Crown which is placed on the head of the complete Initiate. ‘The Kether of each of our Sephiroth is the reflection of that of our Microcosm, which again is a reflection of its Higher Prototypes. . .seeing that it is a presentment of the Divine no Kether can be unbalanced.’ FR #XXI. “Crown,” the first sefirah in the tree. The precise relationship of Kether ro Ain Sof was often confused in early Kabbalah, with some authors stating that there is no substantial difference between the two, and others citing massive essential differences between the source of emanation and the first emanated product. Khabs am Pekht
“Light in Extension.” Ancient Egyptian words that are the origin of the Greek Konx Om Pax, which was uttered at the Eleusinian Mysteries. A literal translation would be Light Rushing out in One Ray and they signify the same form of light as that symbolized by the Staff of the Kerux. 6:18. [M.K.G.] (See Konx om Pax.)
Kingdom of the Microcosm
The Human Being [the Man] standing in his Sephiroth. The boundary, the frontier of the realm of the King with its own character (general aim and tendency of the Kingdom), its own constitution (his Sephiroth as principal scheme or model), its inhabitants, etc. FR #XXI. [M.K.G.]
Konx om Pax
A Greek-based magical phrase used in the Eleusinian Mysteries. Used by the Golden Dawn to mean “Light in Extension.” An Egyptian version of the phrase is Khabs am Pekht. (See Light in Extension.)
Is made by rapping the base or shaft of Wand or the pommel of Sword on a Table. 6:3. [M.K.G.]
Knowledge and Conversation
Specifically, “Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel.” A phrase adapted from Abramelin, picked up by Crowley and others.



A magical symbol suspended from a collar and worn on the chest. A symbol of occult authority worn during rituals. A lamen can is usually a round plate, sometimes made of metal, which has magical symbols or words inscribed upon it. Modern lamens are often made from wood or cardboard.
Lamp of the Kerux
The ever-burning Lamp of the Guardian of the Mysteries. 6:19. [M.K.G.]
Lapis Philosophorum
Latin for the “Stone of the Philosophers.” An alchemical symbol of the transmutation of humanity’s lower nature into a higher, more purified spiritual state. True spiritual attainment and illumination. In practical alchemy, the Stone signifies the manufacturing of gold from a base metal. In spiritual alchemy, it is the transmutation of the Lower into the Higher. (See Alchemy.)
Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. A basic Golden Dawn ritual which cleanses the temple or ritual space of unwanted energies.
Le-Olahm, Amen
Hebrew phrase meaning “the World forever, unto the Ages.” A phrase used in the Qabalistic Cross. (See Amen.)
License to Depart
Granting a spiritual entity permission to leave the temple or circle after the work of magic has been completed.
Light in Extension
Signifies “Light rushing out in One Ray.” The divine light extending itself into manifestation.
Literal Qabalah
That segment of Qabalah which interprets the codes found in Hebrew words contained in mystical texts. Methods of Literal Qabalah include gematria, notariqon, and temurah. (See Qabalah, Gematria; Notariqon; Temurah.)
A Greek word meaning “word.” To the Gnostics this was the term for deity manifest in the universe. The creative principle and underlying law of the universe.
Lotus Wand
The primary implement of a Golden Dawn magician. It is used to invoke or banish all manner of energies. Gives precision to your working and supplies a ready means of appeal to

The Planetary Forces, represented by the Seven double letters of the Hebrew alphabet. FR #XI. [M.K.G.]
The Latin word for “light.” In the Second Order of the Golden Dawn it implies “the Light of the Cross,” since the letters L, V, and X are all portions of one type or another of the cross. These letters are attributed to primary Egyptian gods and to certain grade signs as follows: L = Isis Mourning; V = Apophis and Typhon; and X = Osiris Risen. Along with the sign of Osiris slain, they present the cycles of life, death, and rebirth inherent in the seasons-the Equinoxes and the Solstices.



(sing. Ma’amar): literally, “Utterances,” specifically related to the rabbinic tradition of the “ten Utterances by which the world was created.” In Kabbalistic literature, often a synonym for sefirot. [M.K.G.]
Derived from the Greek mageia the science and religion of the priests of Zoroaster. The art of causing change to occur in one’s environment and one’s consciousness. Willpower, imagination, intention, and the use of symbols and correspondences play a major role in this art. The idea seems to have originated in classical times when the universe was pictured as a series of concentric spheres with God, Aristotle’s prime mover, as the outermost, then the sphere of the fixed stars, then the seven spheres of the planets known to antiquity, then finally, the sphere of the earth, the sublunar world of change and decay. The conception was taken over by the gnostics—those cultists, some pagan, some nominally Christian, who saw neither faith, nor works, but knowledge as the key to salvation—who believed that the human soul must travel up through the spheres, back to God, in order to obtain redemption. It was generally supposed that this rising through the spheres was a post-mortem experience, but some cults held that it could be achieved while still in the body and that the initiate who had achieved or partially achieved this would be possessed of supernatural powers; he who had successfully reached, say, the sphere of Jupiter would have the magical powers of that sphere and of all the spheres below it.” <King, 1982 #88> p. 90-91. Yeats, in his essay “Magic” (1901) in Ideas of Good and Evil (1903) begins: “I believe in the practice and philosophy of what we have agreed to call magic, in what I must call the evocation of spirits, though I do not know what they are, in the power of creating magical illusions, in the visions of truth in the depths of the mind when the eyes are closed.” He continues with the well-known summary of the three doctrines which have ‘been the foundations of nearly all magical practices;’ ‘(1) That the borders of our mind are ever shifting, and that many minds can flow into one another, as it were, and create or reveal a single mind, a single energy. (2) That the borders of our memories are as shifting, and that our memories are a part of one great memory, the memory of Nature herself. Magical Catharsis
Purification, cleansing, or emptying. The release of magical energy at the climax of a ritual. It is often accompanied by an overwhelming emotional release. The term is derived from Aristotle’s description of tragic drama and its effects.
Magical Circle
A confining space or limitation wherein the magician does his work. A protective circle or sacred space against all outside or negative forces. The circle may be physically drawn on the floor or envisioned on the astral by the magician.

Magical Name (or Magical Motto)
A special, magical name or phrase chosen by the magician for use in a magical lodge. A magical name is taken on in order to disassociate oneself from the mundane world for the duration of the magical work. Many magicians choose mottos that have personal spiritual significance for them. Golden Dawn mottos are typically in Latin and Hebrew in order that they are outside the normal language used in secular life.
Magical Square

A skilled or adept magician. Derived from the name magi, the Zoroastrian priest caste, and the Greek term magos or “magician.” Possible connection with the Greek magas or “great,” indicating the “great” science.”

The twenty-two trump cards of a tarot deck, which relate to the twenty- two Paths on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew word for “kingdom,” referring to the tenth Sephirah on the Tree of Life. Seat of Nephesh and of the Animal Soul. On its lowest plane (Assiah) our bodies that we feed and clothe. “Kingdom,” the tenth and last sefirah in the tree, also called the “unreflecting mirror.” The realm of the immanent shekhinah. The twenty-eight days of the Lunar cycle. Each day is assigned to a portion of the 360 degrees of the Zodiac, beginning at 0 degrees Aries.
Mantic Arts
All methods of divination. (See Divination.)
A word or phrase, usually devotional, which is repeated over and over again in order to raise one’s consciousness to a higher level of awareness.
The female aspect of God; also called Shekhinah. [M.K.G.]
The act of quieting the mind in order to “listen” to the inner communications from the Higher Self.
Hebrew for “the Kings.” The group of angels associated with Tiphareth.
“Throne mysticism”, prevalent in the first two centuries C.E.; also defined as “chariot”. Jewish mystics of Talmudic time conceived of the divine realm as a series of chambers and chariots, based on the visions of Ezekiel. [M.K.G.]
The branch of philosophy that examines the nature of reality, including the relationship between mind and matter, substance and attribute, fact and value. A priori speculation upon questions that are unanswerable to scientific observation, analysis, or experiment.
The archangel of Kether and the most powerful of all Hebrew archangels. Said to be the archangel who governs the entire Tree of Life generally, and the white pillar specifically. He is also right-hand Kerub of the Ark of the Covenant. (See Sandalphon.)
Hebrew archangel of elemental fire, invoked in the LBRP and the SIRP. Hebrew for “the perfect of God” or “He who is like unto God.” The archangel of Hod.
The “Lesser Universe.” Humanity as a reflection or miniature of the Macrocosm.

Middle Pillar
The central pillar on the Tree of Life. The Exercise of the Middle Pillar is a Golden Dawn technique for awakening the Sephiroth or Galgalim of the Middle Pillar within the magician’s sphere of sensation. (See Pillar of Mildness; Galgal Middle Pillar Exercise.) The Pillar of Mildness. ‘He who stands straight in the Middle Pillar will not be so prejudiced as his brother who lean towards Severity or Mercy, but unless he is linked with his Kether, he does not take in the whole scheme of his Sephiroth;—is therefore incomplete, and his judgment imperfect. This technique involved the frequent visualisation of a stream of psychic energy, imagined as a current of white light, travelling from above the head to the soles of the feet and back again, in the course of its journey vivifying certain centres of energy. . . . The fifty-six cards of a tarot deck, similar to the a deck of modern playing cards, consisting of forty numbered cards and sixteen court cards. They are attributed to the Sephiroth on the Tree of Life.
Minutum Mundum Diagram
The “small universe.” The full title is Minutum Mundum sive Fundamental Coloris — the Small Universe or Foundation of Colour. In the Golden Dawn, the diagram of the Minutum Mundum is a drawing of the Tree of Life which shows the Sephiroth in the Queen Scale of color and the connecting paths in the King Scale of Color.
Divine precept. Literally “commandment,” a divine ordinance in the halakhah based on either biblical or Talmudic premises. [M.K.G.]
From Greek monos, meaning “alone, single, sole.” One indivisible. Sometimes used to describe Kether.

Mystic Repast
A partaking of the elements. Similar to the Christian Eucharist.
The belief in intuitive spiritual revelation the objective of which is union with the divine. This mystical union is achieved through intuition, faith, ecstasy, or sudden insight rather than through rational thought. Mysticism is sometimes considered a more passive approach to the divine, as opposed to magic, which is more active. The true theurgist must be both mystic and magician.



Nachiel (or Nakhiel)
The intelligence of Sol, the Sun.
Enochian name for the spirit of earth, taken from the Tablet of Union.
A type of Egyptian headdress worn by Golden Dawn magicians.
Comes from the Greek word neophytos or “newly planted.” A beginner. The Neophtye grade is the first initiation into the Golden Dawn. It is symbolized by the number 0 within a circle and the number 0 within a square. A person who has been admitted into the grade of Neophyte. A temple that is arranged for a Neophyte initiation is called the Neophyte Hall.
The last school of Greek philosophy, founded in the third century c.e. by Plotinus, Neoplatonism, dominated Greek thought until the sixth century, c.e. It combined the doctrines of Plato with Oriental mysticism. Neoplatonists believed that reason alone could not satisfy the human soul.
Nephesh (also Nephesch, Nefesh)
In Qabalah, the part of the soul located in Yesod which is described as the Lower Self or Lower Unconscious. Contains primal instincts, fundamental drives and animal vitality. Sometimes called the etheric double or the astral body. Animal or vital Soul. It dissolves upon physical mortality. Nephesch=Malkuth. Animal Soul. It is the vehicle by which the mind is brought into contact with matter. The cloak of the incarnation. The only mortal part about the Man. [M.K.G.]
Neshamah (also Neschamah)
In Qabalah, the highest part of the soul. The Greater Neshamah encompasses Kether, Chokmah, and Binah. The highest aspirations of the soul. The Neshamah proper, or intuitive soul, is found in Binah. The higher aspirations of the Soul. <Regardie, 1984 #13>p. 3:75. Is subdivided into three (an essential trinity): the Yechidah, or Divine Spark (Kether), the Chiah, or Will (Chochmah), and the Neschamah proper (Binah). Neschamah is the Yechidah’s own Understanding (Binah) of itself. Neschamah answers to the World of Briah. It is the higher aspirations of the Soul, which aspire to the ideal. The Divine Mother of the Soul,—our Aima. The only way to get into contact with the Upper and Higher Soul is via the Neschamah. There can be no positively evil side to Neschamah:— there will only be a higher or lower aspiration. If the Ruach overpowers the Neschamah; if the Neschamah seeks the lower good, both will be ruined. The following of a false idea cannot be said to be exactly evil, but is a lower Good than it should be. The way that the initiate becomes the Adept (in part) is: The Ruach directed in accordance with the promptings of the Neschamah keeps the Nephesch from being the ground of the Evil forces, and the Neschamah bring it (the Ruach) into contact with the Chiah (Chochmah) i.e. the genius which stands in the presence of the Holy One=the Yechidah=the Divine Self (Kether), which stands, as it were, before the Synthetical God of all things. That is the only real way to become the Greatest Adept, and is directly dependent on your life and your actions in life. A form of Literal Qabalah. A method for obtaining the hidden meanings of Hebrew words by viewing them as acronyms of phrases, or vice versa. The word is derived from the Latin notarius or “shorthand writer.
Nukba de-Zauir
Hebrew for “female of Zauir.” The female counterpart of Zauir Anpin. The Partzuf attributed to Malkuth, and associated with the final letter Heh of Tetragrammaton. Also called Malkah, the “Queen,” and Kalah, the “Bride.” (See Partzufim.)
Supernatural, awe-inspiring, sublime, and sacred.



Although occasionally striking physical results may ensue, yet there will be danger within. The result of this will always be to make the Operator personate and imitate the action of the Force evoked, even to the extent of attempting to deceive both himself and those who may be with him. A ritual created by Israel Regardie which is based upon the SIRP and the ceremony of the Consecration of the Vault of the Adepti. It is used to invoke the elements and set up a consecrated space as a prelude to the main ritual.
Opening of the Key
A complex method for reading the tarot used in the Second Order of the Golden Dawn. It utilizes five consecutive tarot spreads in a single reading.
Ophanim (or Auphanim)
Hebrew for “the Wheels.” Angelic host assigned to Chokmah.
From the Latin oraculum, “to speak.” In ancient Greece and Rome, an oracle was a shrine dedicated to a particular god where people went to consult a priest or priestess in times of uncertainty. Also, the answer or prophesy inspired by a deity and given to a priest or priestess concerning the future or resolution of a problem, etc.
Prophetic. Speaking with divine authority.
A brotherhood or fraternity. An association or society of like-minded people.
A gnostic symbol of a serpent or dragon which holds its tail in its mouth. It represents the cyclic pattern of nature or time. In alchemy, the oroboros is used to symbolize the cyclic nature of the Great Work.



Pardes (PRDS)
The “garden” or “paradise”, symbolizing Jewish mystical practice. According to rabbinic tradition, a small circle of 2nd C. C.E. Rabbis “entered pardes,” a probable reference to some esoteric theological speculation. PaRDeS became an acronym for the fourfold levels of interpretation found in the biblical text: 1) peshat–literal meaning, 2) remez–the homiletic “hint”, 3) derash–the legal “elucidation’, and 4) sod–the “secret” interpretation. Hebrew word meaning “faces” (singular – partzuf). Refers to a teaching in the Zohar that divides the Sephiroth into five archetypal countenances that constitute more anthropomorphized expressions of the Sephiroth in accordance with the Tetragrammaton. They express YHVH in terms of father, mother, son, and daughter (or bride). The Partzufim include Arik Anpin, Abba, Aima, Zauir Anpin, and Malkah (or Nukba de-Zauir).

Path from Yesod (Foundation) to Tiphereth (Beauty). Temperance/Art in the Tarot. Hebrew letter = Samekh. Astrologically = Sagittarius. ‘The straight and narrow path which leads to truly spiritual regions of perception, that is attained by the process called Rising in the Planes.’ FR #XI. In the Portal Ceremony is said: “Therefore, by the straight and narrow path of Samekh, let the Philosophus advance like the arrow from the Bow of Qesheth. Now Qesheth the Bow is the Rainbow of Promise stretched above the earth, whose name is formed from the letters of the Paths leading from Malkuth.” 3:31. A magical diagram, usually round, inscribed on parchment, metal or some other material to create a talisman. Also, one of the Elemental Weapons of a Golden Dawn magician. (See Elemental Weapons.)
A geometric figure based upon the pentangle, which has five lines and five “points.” Figures based on the pentangle include the pentagram and the pentagon. The pentagram or five-pointed star which is attributed to the five elements of fire, water, air, earth, and spirit. Sometimes called the “Blazing Star,” “wizard’s foot,” the “Star of the Magi,” and the “Star of the Microcosm.” Also called the pentalpha because it can be constructed out of five Greek alphas (A).
A Greek word which means “five-lettered name.” Refers to the Hebrew name of YHShVH – Yeheshuah or the Hebrew name of Jesus, which is the Tetragrammaton, YHVH, with the letter Shin placed in the center of the name.

Philosopher’s Stone
The Stone of the Wise. An alchemical symbol of the transmutation of humanity’s lower nature into a higher, more purified spiritual state. True spiritual attainment and illumination. In practical alchemy, the Stone signifies the manufacturing of gold from a base metal. In spiritual alchemy, it is the transmutation of the Lower into the Higher. (See Alchemy.)
Comes from a Greek word which means “lover of wisdom.” The Philosophus grade is the fifth initiation into the Golden Dawn, and the last of the four elemental grades which comprise the First Degree of the Order. It is associated with the element of fire and the seventh Sephirah of Netzach. It is symbolized by the number 4 within a circle and the number 7 within a square. Piercing of the Dragons’s Coils

Pillars of Hermes and Solomon
Gateway of Occult Science. 6:17. On these are painted certain Hieroglyphics from the 17th and 125th Chapters of the Book of the Dead. They are the symbols of the two powers of Day and Night, Love and Hate, Work and Rest, the subtle force of the Lodestone and the Eternal out-pouring and in-pouring of the Heart of God. 6:18. Pillar of Mercy
The right-hand pillar on the Tree of Life, comprised of the Sephiroth of Chokmah, Chesed, and Netzach. (See Jachin.) Leaning that way leads to corrupted vision thus
seeing the Perfect Judge (of the Middle Pillar) as cruel when that Judge deems
it necessary to extend his arm on the side of Severity. ‘Unbalanced Mercy is
but weakness and would permit Evil to exist unchecked, thus making itself an

Pillar of Mildness
Also called the Middle Pillar or the Pillar of Equilibrium. The central pillar on the Tree of Life comprised of the Sephiroth of Kether, Daath, Tiphareth, Yesod, and Malkuth. (See Middle Pillar.)
Pillar of Severity
The left-hand pillar on the Tree of Life, comprised of the Sephiroth of Binah, Geburah, and Hod. (See Boaz.) Leaning that way leads to corrupted vision thus seeing the Perfect Judge (of the Millar Pillar) as feeble, when that Judge may have found it well to extend his arms on the side of Mercy. ‘Unbalanced Severity is cruelty and oppression.’ FR #XXI [M.K.G.]

Planetary Forces
The Seven double letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Also called the ‘Lords Who Wander.’ FR #XI [M.K.G.]
The intermediate grade between the First and Second Orders of the Golden Dawn. The Second Degree of the Order. A person who has been admitted to the Second Degree. An intermediate degree dividing the Outer Order from the Second Order, in which magic was practised. After the Elemental grades, a period of seven months—the regimen of the Planets—had to elapse before aspiring to the Portal Grade. A further nine months usually went by—the analogy to gestation is apparent—before reception into the Second Order, the Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis. <#88> p. 98.[M.K.G.]
Practical Qabalah
That segment of Qabalah which deals with the construction of talismans used in ceremonial magic. (See Qabalah.)
The fourth initiation into the Golden Dawn, and the third of the four elemental grades which comprise the First Degree of the Order. The name practicus indicates that the initiate is beginning to put theory into practice. It is associated with the element of water and the eighth Sephirah of Hod. It is symbolized by the number 3 within a circle and the number 8 within a square. A person who has been admitted into the grade of Practicus.
Latin word meaning “guide” and “one who prophesies.” The teacher. One of the Three Chief Officers in the Neophyte Hall.
A female Praemonstrator.
Thou who art the First and the Last.” One of three Greek divine names that surround the Triangle of Art.
Prisci Theogici
The “Pristine Theologians.” Namely Moses, Hermes Trismegistos, and Zoroaster—considered by Renaissance philosophers as the three great spiritual teachers of the world who had foreshadowed the teachings of Christ.
The Tattva associated with the element of earth, depicted as yellow square. (See Tattva.)
Projecting Sign
Also called the “Sign of Horus.” One of the Neophtye Signs of the Golden Dawn.
Protecting Sign
Also called the “Sign of Silence” and the “Sign of Harpacrates.” One of the Neophtye Signs of the Golden Dawn.
The Greek word for “soul.” The mind functioning as the center of thought, emotion, and behavior and consciously or unconsciously adjusting or mediating the body’s responses to the social and physical environment.
Of or relating to the psyche. Also, a person who is susceptible to psychic influences or energies. A sensitive.

Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage
A magical text translated by S. L. Mathers. The French manuscript was written in the eighteenth century, but it purports to be a translation from an original text in Hebrew, dating from 1458. The grimoire contains elaborate instructions in the form of a six-month program of purification and prayer, designed to lead the magician to higher state of consciousness in which “knowledge and conversation with the Holy Guardian Angel” is possible.

Scales of Colour
1) Scale of the King, that of the G.D. and the Adept Minor. Sepher Yetzirah
Hebrew phrase meaning “the Book of Formation.” One of the oldest of the Qabalistic texts. anon.- 3rd to 6th c. C.E.
Hebrew for “the Flaming Ones.” Fiery Serpents. The angelic host of Geburah.
Serpent Nechushtan

Shaddai El Chai
Hebrew phrase meaning “Almighty Living God.” Divine name of Yesod.
God’s female aspect and immanent presence, also called Matrona, or Adonah; resides in the sphere of Sovereignty (Malkuth) on the Tree. Also said to be Binah, or Chochmah-when-in-relation-to-Kether. Means “to settle down and rest” or to dwell somewhere. It was the “dwelling place” of the Divine. The face of the Divine Presence. [M.K.G.]
Shem ha-Mephoresh
A Hebrew phrase meaning “the Seventy-two-fold Name of God,” said to be an extension of the Tetragrammaton. A divine name of 216 letters derived from three verses in the Biblical book of Exodus (Exodus 14:19-21). One of the systems of temurah is used on these verses to obtain 72 names of God, which are each assigned to one of the 72 quinances (sets of five degrees) of the Zodiac. The names of 72 angels are formed by adding the suffixes “yah” or “el” to the 72God-names.

“Shining Stones are especially under the Light; and they are centres for the action thereof in the darkness of matter, as it is said: ‘My Light is concealed in all that shineth.’ (Zend-Avesta). They are therefore under the rule of the three active elements with an earthy base.” 3:45 [M.K.G.]
A seal, sign, or signature. A symbol used to represent a spiritual force, such as an angel, archangel, or a divine name of God. Any name or word can be made into a sigil.

Actions through which the grade of a member is known. [M.K.G.]
Sign of Horus
The Saluting Sign of the Neophyte Grade. Thrusting both arms horizontally forward, palms downwards, as if groping your way and bow your head. = condition in a state of darkness, unillumined and searching for truth. 6:17 [M.K.G.]
Sign of Harpocrates
The Sign of Silence. Done in response to Saluting Sign. Placing the left first finger on the mouth. = the strict silence inculcated by obligation. [M.K.G.]
Sign of the Enterer
Also called the Projection Sign, the Attacking Sign and the Sign of Horus. It is one of the two grade signs of a Neophyte of the Golden Dawn. (See Sign of Horus)
An image used in sympathetic magic that is considered to be the magical double of the object that it represents.
The Supreme Invoking Ritual of the Pentagram. An Inner Order ritual for invoking elemental energies.
Sixth Sense
That of Astral perception, or the power of perceiving forces and entities on the plane next to the earth. FR #XIX [M.K.G.]
One who skrys. A seer. (See Skrying.) Not just a Seer, but one who descries what he seeks, not only the impassive receiver of visions beyond control of definition. FR #XI. [M.K.G.]
Derived from the old English word descry meaning “to see” or “to observe.” A form of clairvoyance which usually uses mirrors, crystals, a bowl of water, or other gazing devices. The skrying device is an aid to concentration which helps the skryer calm the conscious mind and allow spiritual visions to come through.
Skrying in the Spirit Vision
Skrying as performed by the Golden Dawn is usually done by using a painted symbol — such as a Tattva card or elemental symbol — rather than a crystal or mirror to skry into. Geomantic or planetary symbols or tarot cards may also be used for this procedure. Similar in some ways to Astral Projection. Magical manner of operation: through his own
arcane wisdom, he [the skyrer] knows the disposition and correspondences of the
Forces of the Macrocosmos. Selecting not many, but one symbol, and that balanced and
with its correlatives, then sendeth he a thought-ray from his Spiritual
Consciousness, illumined by his Higher Will, directly unto the part of his
Sphere of Sensation which is consonant with the symbol employed. There, as in a mirror, doth he perceive its properties as reflected from
the Macrocosmos, shining forth into the Infinite Abyss of the Heavens. 3:44. [M.K.G.]
Solve et Coagula
Latin phrase meaning “dissolve and coagulate.” Alchemical axiom which points to the practice of reducing a solid to a liquid and back to a solid again. Used as a metaphor for the practice of psychotherapy and self-integration.
The Spirit of Sol, the Sun.
The middle portion of the three-fold constitution of man; body, soul, and spirit. The soul is the personal part of an individual and the mediator between the physical body and the divine spirit. The Soul is divided by the Qabalists into three principle parts: Neschamah (which is further divided into three parts: Yechidah: Kether, Chiah: Chokmah, and Neschamah: Binah), Ruach: Chesed to Yesod, inclusive = mind and reasoning powers, and Nephesch: Malkuth = animal instincts. <Regardie, 1984 #13>p. 3:75. ‘The Alchemists of old, when passing from the physical wrote in beautiful allegory:—The Heart of man is as the Sun, the reception organ for the Divine Ray of spiritual intuition descending unto Man. Sphere of Sensation
Also called ‘Akashic envelope’ or Aura. ‘The frontier of the realm of the Kingdom of the Microcosm (the man); his boundary; and consisting of his Sephiroth.’ FR #XXI. ‘Everything in the Cosmos is somehow reflected or pictured on each man’s own sphere of sensation, it follows that if he could but be conscious of the pictures so reflected or imprinted he would at once be possessed of all actual or potential knowledge of everything in the Cosmos. All that is reflected in our sphere of sensation includes all knowlege past, present and future.’ All knowledge lies within each man’s own sphere and can be obtained through intuition (looking within). Has corresponding regions of the Cosmos. Reflects everything that is in the material Universe. FR #XXV. “Thou shalt know that the whole Sphere of Sensation which surroundeth the whole physical body of a man is called “The Magical Mirror of the Universe.” For therein are represented all the occult forces of the Universe projected as on a sphere, convex to the outer, but concave to man. This sphere surroundeth the physical body of a man as the Celestial Heavens do the body of a Star or a Planet, having their forces mirrored in its atmosphere. Therefore its allotment or organization is the copy of that Greater World or Macrocosm In this “Magical Mirror of the Universe” therefore, are the Ten Sephiroth projected in the form of the Tree of Life as in a solid sphere. The transcendent fifth element which unities and governs the other four elements. The vital principle or animating force within living beings. Also, a sentient, incorporeal entity.
Spirit language
The language wherein a clairvoyant communication is received need not necessarily be that in which the Force involved would speak, supposing it to be endowed with the human organs of speech, but the impression received by the Operator is translated according to the understanding of the Operator. Spiritual Consciousness
Daath. Transmits energies from the Divine Consciousness (Yechidah, or Kether) into the lower sephiroth. That you perform or endeavour to perform the transmutation of the vital forces of life into higher currents of life or rather their transmutation out of the lower into the higher so that you can use them for the purposes of Theurgia. Stone of the Philosophers
The Philosopher’s Stone. A symbol of true spiritual attainment and illumination. The search for the Philosopher’s Stone is the search for ultimate truth and purity. The transmutation of humanity’s lower nature into the Higher Self.
Stone of the Wise
“That is, the will which had become self-creative and was united eternally to its celestial, progressive, penetrative faculty. The consecrated will and purified Thought of the true Magus.” <Farr, 1982 #15>p. 8. [M.K.G.]
Greek word meaning “preparer.” An officer in the Neophyte Hall who is in charge of all regalia and purifications. Stationed in the North to symbolize cold and moisture. Duty is to see that the robes, collars and insignia of the Officers are ready before the opening of the Temple. Attends to the cup of lustral water and assists in the purification and consecration by water, of the Hall, of the Members, and of the Candidate. 6:5. [M.K.G.]
Subtle Body
The psycho-physical circuitry of a human being through which the life force flows. Energy blue-print for the physical body. Sometimes called the astral body, etheric double, or body of light.
Summum Bonum
The “Highest Good.”
celestial or heavenly. In Qabalah it refers to the three highest Sephiroth on the Tree of Life which are often called the Supernal Triad.
‘The physical means used to produce the sensitiveness necessary to consciously perceive the images on the Sphere of Sensation. Ideas and visions are thus produced in the brain. Knowledge of the attributions and meanings of the symbol produces an immediate concentration of thought of vital energy, or nerve force, and of actual physical blood on the tract of brain related thereto.’ FR #XXV. Symbol for Clairvoyance
‘It is well to commence by means of a Symbol, such as a drawing, or coloured diagram, related in design, form and colour to the subject chosen for study. The simple and compound Tattva emblems are suitable for this process. The Symbol should be of convenient size, for the eye to take it in at a glance, and large enough not to require too close an application of sight to realise the details. To use the Symbol place it before you, as on a table, place the hands beside it, or hold it up with both hands, then, with the utmost concentration, gaze at it, comprehend it, formulate its meaning and relations. When the mind is steady upon it: close the eyes and continue the meditation, and let the conception still remain before you, keep up the design, form, and colour in the akashic aura, as clearly as they appeared in material form to the outward seeing. Transfer the Vital effort from the optic nerve to the mental perception, or thought seeing as distinct from seeing with the eye; let one form of apprehension glide on with the other—produce the reality of the dream vision, by positive will in the waking state.’ [Important see the Flying Roll for further instruction before attempting.] In using Symbols it is necessary to avoid Self hypnotisation, for this occurrence would dispose you to mediumship. ‘If you enter upon the Spirit Vision without a Symbol you proceed by a mental symbol, imagined in the Astral Light: this is not a wise proceeding for learners because it opens the door to other Astral effects; you create a vortex, into which other atral influences are drawn and hence confusion and mischief may result. In using symbols, placed before you—it is a useful addition to provide a large circular (or square) tablet,around which are placed Divine Names etc. related to the Elements, and to the cardinal points; then after arranging this duly, with respect to the compass, place your symbol upon and within this frame. An object which is charged or consecrated toward the achieving of a specific end. A talisman is a magical object that has been charged with a force that it is intended to represent. Usually intended to draw something to the magician. (Also see Telesmatic.)
The spirit of Mercury or Thoth, whose gematriatic number is 2080, from ThPThRThRTh, which is the sum of all the numbers (1 to 64) on the magic square of Mercury. [M.K.G.]
A system of divination that employs a mystical set of 78 cards separated into two main divisions-the Major and Minor Arcana. In many Hermetic groups, they are used primarily for meditative purposes. (See Divination; Major Arcana; Minor Arcana.)
Tattva (or Tattwa)
Sanskrit word meaning “quality.” The five main tattvas (Prithivi, Vayu, Apas, Tejas, and Akasa), correspond to the five elements of earth, air, water, fire, and spirit. In the Golden Dawn, the symbols that represent the tattvas are used for skrying. (See Skrying.)
Tattva Construction
The cards should be of convenient size and as uniform as possible, in a square or tall rectangle. the Sub-Tattva should occupy about one fifth of the area of the main Tattva (one quarter is rather too large). Dirty cards are apt, without the intention of the maker, to attract evil and delusive Elemental Influences from the fact that their formulae necessarily imply hidden iniquity. FR #XXX. The background may be of the complementary color to the main tattva, creating a reversal of colors when, after concentrated gazing, the eyes are called. This is called a “flashing” color. [M.K.G.]
Tattvic Skrying
The Skryer should use the proper Names, Implements etc. and follow the general directions for Clairvoyant Visioning. Describe carefully and in detail the landscape etc. of the vision, and discover, if possible:— 1) The special attributes and varying natures of the Plane. 2) Its elemental Nature. 3) The Inhabitants (Elemental, Spiritual etc.) 4) The Plants, Animals, Minerals etc. which would be correspondent to the Nature of the Plane. 5) The Operation of its Influence in the Universe or Macrocosm upon (a) this particular Planet (b) animals, plants and minerals. 6) The Operation of its Influence upon the Microcosm, i.e. Man. He or she who is operating should avoid carefully any self-hypnotisation by the Tattva, for this will simply lead to foolish and hysteric visions, the offspring of the intoxication of the Operator’s astral sphere by the Tattva. From the Greek word telesmata meaning “talismans.” Usually refers to a created or visualized image of a deity or angel, particularly images that have been built using Hebrew letter correspondences.
Hebrew word meaning “permutation.” A form of Literal Qabalah which transposes letters of the Hebrew alphabet, swapping one letter for another, usually in accordance with a table or chart. This results in the creation of a new word which can be compared with the original word for interpretive meaning. This technique is most often used to study Hebrew scripture.
A Greek word meaning “four-lettered name.” Refers to the highest divine Hebrew name of God, YHVH.
Greek word meaning “miracle-working.” Magic used to create changes in the material world.
Theban Letters
Used to write the name upon the girdle described in the Flying Roll which explains the Yetziratic formation of an image of Adonai ha-Aretz. This alphabet is found in Cornelius Agrippa’s Works and in Barrett’s Magus, and in Mathers’ edition of The Key of Solomon. FR #XXXII.[M.K.G.]
Comes from the Greek word for “beholder,” “onlooker” or “student.” The Theoricus grade is the third initiation into the Golden Dawn, and the second of the four elemental grades which comprise the First Degree of the Order. It is associated with the element of air and the ninth Sephirah of Yesod. It is symbolized by the number 2 within a circle and the number 9 within a square. A person who has been admitted into the grade of Theoricus.

The ten Sephiroth and the twenty-two paths which connect them.
“Thought” is a mighty force when projected with all the strength of the lower Will under the guidance of the reasoning faculty and illuminated by the Higher Will. 3:43. To obtain magical Power, learn to control thought. Admit only true ideas which are in harmony with the end desired. Fixed thought is a means to an end; therefore pay attention to the power of silent thought and meditation. The material act is but the outward expression of the thought. Truth. The Great Thoth is the highest aspect of the Hermes of the most ancient Egyptian Mysteries, and corresponds almost to the Great Angel Metatron. Three Alchemic Principles
Three fundamental substances in Alchemy that said to exist in all things. They are Sulfur, Mercury, and Salt, which relate to the ideas of soul, spirit, and body. These substances are not to be confused with ordinary substances of the same name.
Three Negative Veils
Three abstract stages of “nothingness” from which emanate the Sephiroth. The three negative veils are Ain, Ain Soph, and Ain Soph Aur.
Spiritual “correction”. “To mend, repair, and transform the world–every human act aids or impedes this process.”[M.K.G.]

The Intelligence of Mercury.
The process of changing, from one form, substance, nature, or state to another. In alchemy, it refers to the changing of something base into something higher or more sublime.

Tree of Life
In Hebrew Etz ha-Chayim. A glyph or symbol that is central to the Qabalah. It is a symmetrical drawing of ten circles or spheres known collectively as Sephiroth arranged in a certain manner, with 22 connecting paths running between the spheres. It is considered a blueprint for understanding all things and relationships in the universe, including the essence of God and the soul of humanity. (See Qabalah; Sephiroth.)
Triangle of Art
The figure of a circle surrounded by names of power and contained within a triangle, wherein non-physical entities appear in an evocation, to those who are trained to be able to see them.
Triangle, White
The Image of that Immortal Light, that Triune Light, which moved in Darkness and formed the World of Darkness and out of Darkness [Ain, Ain Soph, Ain Soph Aur]. There are two contending Forces and One always uniting them. And these Three have their Image in the three-fold Flame of our Being and in the threefold wave of the sensual world. 6:18. [M.K.G.]

Uriel (or Auriel)
Hebrew for “Light of God.” Hebrew archangel of elemental earth, invoked in the LBRP and the SIRP.



Vau (or Vav)
Unto the Letter Vau belong Divination in all its branches; and the art of making the Link between the subject of the work and the process of divination. 6:32. [M.K.G.]
Vault of the Adepti
The ritual chamber of the Second Order. Represents the symbolic burying place of our founder C.R.C.. It is also the mystic Cavern in the sacred Mountain of Initiation—Abiegnus. Therefore it is the Chamber of initiation wherein, after passing through the preliminary training of the Outer,we are received into the Portal of the Rose of Ruby and the Cross of Gold. 8:28. The Tomb or Vault is a small seven sided chamber with a black floor, a white ceiling. The Pastos lies with its head to the East; over it is the Circular Altar…. Each Wall of the Tomb is said mystically to be 5 feet in breadth, 8 feet in height, thus yielding 40 squares, of which 10 are marked and salient representing the Ten Sephiroth in the form of the Tree of Life, acting through the planets. 8:32. Vibratory Formula
A method by which divine names and words are intoned forcefully and with authority in a “vibration.” Properly performed, the vibration should be felt throughout the entire body, and imagined to be vibrated throughout the universe.
The practice of imaging something, such as a place or deity, with intense clarity.
Vital Force
‘All powerful Occult work exhausts the Vital force, especially from beginners, and you will feel at first distinct exhaustion from loss of akasha, which however is not lost but transferred to the symbol and there preserved, fading away from thence, only slowly into the ocean of energies.’ FR #XI [M.K.G.]



Washing of the Garments of the Queen
Suggests freeing of Malkuth. Also referred to as Piercing of the Dragons’s Coils. 6:85. [M.K.G.]
One of the four magical elements. Water is said to be a combination of the qualities of cold and moisture. It is considered passive, feminine, receptive, sustaining, subconscious, creative, fluidic, and generative. (See Elements.)
Water Cup
One of the Elemental weapons or implements of the Adept. Used to invoke or banish the element of water.

Western Occultism
The magic and mysticism of Europe and the western world that is descended from Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. The Western tradition also includes Jewish, Arabic, Christian, and indigenous European magic. Its geographic territory is approximately coequal to the area covered by Christianity.
White Magic
Magic performed for beneficial purposes or divine intent, often involving beneficent entities. Ceremonial magic performed for spiritual growth. (See Theurgy.)

“A strong and decided will,” says Eliphas Levi, “can in a short space of time arrive at absolute independence.” FR #II. The Will which is necessary [to Magic] is the undivided Will and its cultivation must be continued at all times. Never will more than one thing at a time, nor allow it to be mixed up with Desire. A fixed concentration of mnd must be encouraged if you want to have success. FR #XIX. ‘Will unaided [by Imagination] can send forth a current, yet its effect is vague and indefinite. The Qabalah taught that man, by his creative power through Will and Thought (Imagination)—was more Divine than Angels; for he can create—they cannot. FR #V ‘It is through the agency of the will that the hidden becomes manifest, whether in the Universe or Man. . . . . The method I advise for cultivation of will is, to imagine your head as centre of attraction with thought like rays radiating out in a vast globe. To want or desire a thing is the first step in the exercise of Will; get a distinct image of the thing you desire placed, as it were, in your heart, concentrate all your wandering rays of thought upon this image until you feel it to be one glowing scarlet ball of compacted force. Then project this concentrated force on the subject you wish to affect.” Desire weakens will. Masterly indifference is the great theme in teaching us. “Mars, Geburah, Fire, Aries, each expresive of the will force on different planes, are all red in colour.” FF. FR #II. Mathers suggests that: ‘Before bringing the scarlet ray into such intense action in the Heart, that the Adept should elevate his thought and idea to the contemplation of the Divine Light in Kether, and considering Kether as the crown of the head, to endeavour to bring a ray from thence, into his heart—his Tiphereth through his path of gimel and then to send the scarlet ray into action; the effect will be powerful and the process safer: otherwise there is a risk to the heart, and a risk of fever, if it be frequently done.” FR #VI [M.K.G.]

Kether. It is described as the true Divine Self. The purest form of consciousness. Allotted to Kether in Assiah in the Microcosm. Part of the ‘Higher Genius’ with Chiah though not the highest self. FR #X. “This Yechidah is at the same time the Higher Human Self and the Lower Genius, the God of the Man, the Atziluth of his Assiah, even as Chiah and Neschamah form his Briah, and Ruach his Yetzirah. This is the Higher Will and the Divine Consciousness, as Daath is the Spiritual Consciousness, Tiphareth the Human Consciousness, and Yesod the Automatic Consciousness.&8221;<Regardie, 1984 #13>p. 3:42. “It is the Divine Consciousness because it is the only part of man which can touch the All potent forces. Behind Yechidah are Angelic and Archangelic Forces of which Yechidah is the manifestor. Hebrew name for Jesus. Also called the Pentagrammaton, a Greek word which means five-lettered name. This refers to the Tetragrammaton or “four-lettered name” (YHVH), with the letter Shin placed in the center of the name. Thus, the four elements of YHVH (Fire, Water, Air, and Earth) are completed, crowned, and governed by a fifth Spirit. (See Pentagrammaton.) The significance of the Pentagrammaton was explored at length by Johannes Reuchlin (1455-1522) in his book De Verbo Mirifico or “Concerning the Miraculous Word.”
Hebrew word for “foundation,” referring to the ninth Sephirah on the Tree of Life.
The third of four Qabalistic Worlds or stages of manifestation. It is known as the World of Formation and is the realm of angels. It is attributed to the spheres of Chesed, Geburah, Tiphareth, Netzach, Hod, and Yesod. It is attributed to the element of air. (See Four Worlds of the Qabalah.)
Four letters (Yod Heh Vav Heh) which stand for the highest Hebrew name for God, which is considered unknown and unpronounceable. These letters are also attributed to the four elements of fire, water, air, and earth. Often referred to as the Tetragrammaton.
YHVH Elohim
Divine Hebrew name of Binah, meaning “the Lord, God.” Also associated with Daath in the Exercise of the Middle Pillar.
YHVH Eloah ve-Daath
Divine Hebrew name of Tiphareth meaning “Lord, God of Knowledge.”
YHVH Tzabaoth
Divine Hebrew name of Netzach, meaning “Lord of Armies.”

Zauir Anpin
Hebrew for “short faced.” Also known as the “Lesser Countenance” and Microprosopus. The son of Abba and Aima. The Partzuf attributed to the six Sephiroth from Chesed to Yesod, and associated with the letter Vav of Tetragrammaton. (See Partzufim.)
The Spirit of Saturn.
Comes from the Greek word for “zealot.” The Zelator grade is the second initiation into the Golden Dawn, and the first of the four elemental grades which comprise the First Degree of the Order. It is associated with the element of earth and the tenth Sephirah of Malkuth. It is symbolized by the number 1 within a circle and the number 10 within a square. A person who has been admitted into the grade of Zelator.

A circle or belt which is said to extend eight or nine degrees on each side of the ecliptic (the sun’s apparent path around the earth, or the orbit of the earth as viewed from the sun.) A zodiacal wheel is a flat chart which is divided into twelve houses, each of which is said to be ruled by one of the twelve zodiacal signs.
The “Book of Splendor,” a huge Qabalistic text first published by Moses de Leon in the fourteenth century, but alleged to have been written by Simeon ben Yohai. The Zohar includes commentaries on the Torah. Moses de Leon is the probable author.
